I’m Not Willy Nilly

bitsquiltfrnt I originally saw this idea for a quilt at someone’s blog, either here or here, I can’t remember which and thought I have to do this.  This is so easy and carefree and so stinking cute.  Two out of three aren’t bad I guess.  Actually it is very simple……randomly cut small squares of colored fabric and then box them in on three sides with white.  The problem I have is I don’t work well on the fly apparently.  I do better with specific sizes and precise instructions on how to put it all together.  Too bad for me because I do really love the random look of it.  Originally this was going to be lap size but decided to cut what I had put together in half and make two very generous doll quilts or two skimpy crib size quilts 🙂

bitsquiltcloseAnother reason for choosing to make two smaller sizes is because this was my first attempt at machine quilting.  I think it went ok for a first try.  It’s definately something you have to practice, practice, practice to get it just right.  To be honest, I really like the look of  my hand stitched quilts better and I enjoy hand quilting but I will try my hand at machine quilting again and get better at it.

bitsquiltbackAnother pieced back.  I am slowly but surely working my way through my small stash of fabric so i will feel justified in buying more lol.

Oh and one more thing I learned.  I wish I could remember where I got this tip from because it’s so smart and helpful.  When putting the quilt “sandwich” together I would always lay the back down first, then the batting and finally the top.  Thanks to some smart soul in cyberland I now know it’s much easier to lay your batting down then center up the top on that.  Trim it to the correct size, then roll it up and put it aside.  Lay your back down and unroll your top/batting combo onto that.   It makes the process so much easier and faster!  Now why didn’t I think of that??   I hope that tip helps someone as much as it helped me.

My New Toy

Apologies first for not blogging in so long.   Let’s just blame that on Facebook, ok.

Now on to the fun stuff!!!

I have been looking around for a new sewing machine for awhile now.  I love my little Singer Simple but let’s be honest, there’s not much to it.  I knew that when I bought it but I didn’t really know how much sewing and quilting I would do so I didn’t want to invest too much.  I had been pricing them in the stores but in the spirit of not wanting to shell out too much money, I turned to my good old faithful Craigslist.   I would check several times a day and finally Saturday night one popped up that caught my eye.  I mulled it over until about noon on Sunday and I called the owner and made plans to go get it.  Isn’t she a beaut??  It’s a Brother NV-600.

brotherThe lady had taken impeccable care of it and decided it was time for an upgrade for her since she was getting more into machine embroidery.  She bought it 4 years ago and paid over $900.  She sold it to me for $350 :-)))))  I did some research online and found that I could still buy this machine brand new anywhere from $500 to $800 so you know this makes me love the machine even more.  It has features that I know I’ll never figure out but I will have fun trying.  Here’s the best part……sewingaccess

A tray full of feet!!!!!  How exciting is that??  Do you have any idea how easily you can sew a denim rag quilt with a walking foot?  I do now!!!  And this…..quiltingfoot

a foot for free motion quilting!!!  I am over the moon about it all.

I really hesitated about spending the money for this but it was such a good deal, I couldn’t resist.  Even my husband, who is way more frugal than I am, told me I should get it and I’m so glad I did.  I am going to finish hand quilting the Love quilt and then my next quilt will be done on the machine so I can’t wait to get started.  I have already started practicing with small scraps of material and batting because it’s going to take quite a bit of practice to get it down but I’m up for the challenge.

She’s Done

quilt-001I’m finally finished with my project.  I got the pattern from the summer issue of Quick Quilts.  The name of it is “Spindrift” and it was featured on the cover.  All the bright colors caught my eye so I knew I had to do this one.  I’m a sucker for brights 🙂  As usual this one was hand quilted but I tried something a little different on the back.  Instead of a solid color, I pieced three different prints and am happy with the way it turned out.  I was also happy that I didn’t have to buy any material to do it.  These were three pieces that I had in my stash already!

I have just spent the last 15 minutes browsing back through my old posts and boy was it enlightening.  First of all because I used to actually write longer posts about things going on in my life.  I guess I must have bored myself silly because I don’t do a lot of that anymore lol.  It was also enlightening to see that back just over a year ago is when I started learning how to quilt and 15 months later I  have completed 9 quilts!  That’s amazing to me.  By no means am I claiming to be great at it but with every quilt I have learned something new and isn’t that what life is supposed to be about?  I’m happy to have found something that gives me joy and challenges me.  I’m so thankful that there are so many fantastic quilters out there that share their work online because that inspires me to try new things too.  I only have two quilting friends in my real life so blog land is a blessing to me.   I hope everyone enjoys their week-end.  We are headed down to an out of town football game but other than that, no plans for me.  No complaints because no plans equals lots of quilting time 🙂

Two time takers

I currently have two things taking up all my free time.  The first is this:Sorry the picture turned out so dark.  The colors are very bright and cheerful so the picture doesn’t do it justice.  It’s very large and I’m hand quilting it so it will be awhile before it’s done.  I can’t wait to take a better picture for you to see just how “happy” it looks.

The second is this:  I’m not quite finished with it but I have to say I am so blown away!  The things people will do in the name of religion.  I am going to save all my thoughts and opinions until I am totally done reading so stay tuned lol.

Baby boy quilt done

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , at 11:48 pm by sillydreamer

The quilt for my neice’s baby is done, and what a coincidence, he was born last Thursday!  Technically the quilt was finished last Thursday too but I didn’t upload the pictures until just now.  Just now, as in I should be cooking dinner but instead, I was uploading pictures and writing this post.  What to do with me?

This was the result of a few pairs of my husband’s khaki shorts, a plaid shirt, a khaki shirt and a pair of my old cords.  I was pleased with how it turned out, it does look nicer in person.  I did all the quilting by hand and a few different designs in various blocks.

My favorite blocks are the cordorouys!  I love the feel of them.  Actually the whole quilt is very soft.

I was stumped on what to do for the backing and binding so here’s what I came up with.  I’m such a girl that it’s really hard for me to get excited about anything other than cute, flowery, pink, girly things but that doesn’t make the whole world go ’round, does it?  For the binding, I did sew it to the back and used a basic zig zag stitch to finish it off.  The picture I took of that didn’t come out so well so I didn’t bother posting it.

A work in progress

I finished the quilt top for my neice’s baby.  Hubby cleaned out his closet and I used three pairs of khaki shorts, a plaid shirt and a pair of cords that I haven’t worn in a couple of years.  All to a good cause 🙂  I’ll go tomorrow and find the backing and binding to finish it up.  In case you are interested I cut strips 2 1/2 inches wide, 4 1/2 inches wide and 8 1/2 inches square.  I used one 4 1/2 strip, and two 2 1/2 inch strips to make a square.  I laid them out in a checkerboard design, alternating the three strip squares with a solid 8 1/2 inch square.  I cut a three inch wide strip from each of the three strip squares and joined those together to make a row on the top and a row on the bottom of the quilt.  The picture was taken with my Blackberry so the quality isn’t as good as if I had used my regular camera.  I have to say that I love using the Blackberry because I don’t have to resize, just copy and paste though 🙂

Today Hubby offered to stop into a quilt store that I haven’t visited yet so of course I took him up on it.  Why wouldn’t I?  It was really nice and carried more of the style fabric I like…..bright colors and cute prints as opposed to the “traditional” quilting fabrics.  Even though I am currently working on a quilt and have another that I am also working on, I couldn’t resist picking up a couple of these charm packs.  I can’t wait to do something with them!  It is Flirtations by Moda and so stinking cute!  Hubby scored major points for taking me there AND also going into another quilt store that I hadn’t been into yet.  All this from a man who would probably prefer having his fingernails ripped out than having to go into Joann’s to look for fabric!  Very impressive 🙂

I love the blogging world.  I love sitting down everyday and catching up on all my daily blog reading, which is taking up a lot of my time lately but that’s ok though.  I am trying to make a better effort to comment more too.  I feel really guilty when I don’t get to read everyone’s everyday lol.  Why?  I guess I’m afraid I’m going to hurt someone’s feelings.  It’s just like when I give a book review on here, I’m so hesitant to say something negative because I can envision the author stumbling upon my lowly little site and getting their feelings hurt because I didn’t like their book.  I am sooooo pathetic!

I hope everyone has a wonderful week-end.  I have started a new project….a denim rag quilt and I’m so excited about it.  I’m going to maybe embroider a few simple designs on some of the squares and then write notes to my family on others.  I hope the girls will want to add some notes of their own too.  Well…..I guess it depends on what kind of notes they want to write, huh?

And speaking of kids, my daughter I mentioned yesterday did manage to clean her room.  Of course she did, it’s Friday which means she must want to go somewhere tonight.  She came and asked to go out to end with her friend’s family last night and I told her no so maybe, just maybe, she had a light bulb moment that if she ever wanted to leave this house again, she might want to make an effort in there.  Gotta love that kid!

Have a wonderful, wonderful Friday and thanks for taking the time to stop by and read my ramblings 🙂
