I’m Not Willy Nilly

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , , , at 2:39 pm by sillydreamer

bitsquiltfrnt I originally saw this idea for a quilt at someone’s blog, either here or here, I can’t remember which and thought I have to do this.  This is so easy and carefree and so stinking cute.  Two out of three aren’t bad I guess.  Actually it is very simple……randomly cut small squares of colored fabric and then box them in on three sides with white.  The problem I have is I don’t work well on the fly apparently.  I do better with specific sizes and precise instructions on how to put it all together.  Too bad for me because I do really love the random look of it.  Originally this was going to be lap size but decided to cut what I had put together in half and make two very generous doll quilts or two skimpy crib size quilts 🙂

bitsquiltcloseAnother reason for choosing to make two smaller sizes is because this was my first attempt at machine quilting.  I think it went ok for a first try.  It’s definately something you have to practice, practice, practice to get it just right.  To be honest, I really like the look of  my hand stitched quilts better and I enjoy hand quilting but I will try my hand at machine quilting again and get better at it.

bitsquiltbackAnother pieced back.  I am slowly but surely working my way through my small stash of fabric so i will feel justified in buying more lol.

Oh and one more thing I learned.  I wish I could remember where I got this tip from because it’s so smart and helpful.  When putting the quilt “sandwich” together I would always lay the back down first, then the batting and finally the top.  Thanks to some smart soul in cyberland I now know it’s much easier to lay your batting down then center up the top on that.  Trim it to the correct size, then roll it up and put it aside.  Lay your back down and unroll your top/batting combo onto that.   It makes the process so much easier and faster!  Now why didn’t I think of that??   I hope that tip helps someone as much as it helped me.

The Love Quilt is Done

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , at 3:18 pm by sillydreamer

love-quilt-001love-quilt-backThe Love Quilt is done!!!  I used two Flirtations charm packs from Moda and then bought solid red, brown, pink and natural muslin to box around the squares.  The backing is solid natural muslin and then a row of the other colors for that extra little pretty 🙂

embroidery-love-quiltAnd because I love him so 🙂  It looks a little misshapen but it lays much flatter in real life.

lovequilt-bindingNot too crazy about the binding as I think the print is too large and would have looked better with smaller dots but I’m leaving it.  I actually hand stitched the binding down instead of doing the decorative stitch that I usually do and I was happy with how that turned out.

A Crafttastic Day

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , , , , , at 4:27 pm by sillydreamer

Hubby got me this beautiful frame awhile back to go in my bathroom but I had no idea what I was going to put in it.  Well actually, in my head I had an idea but searched high and low for some stickers or stamps of what I wanted with no luck.  I had actually forgotten about it until a couple of days ago and pulled it out.   I pulled out some rubber stamps that I had and stamped the images on either end.  Then I found a chipboard bird that I just traced onto black cardstock, cut out and mounted onto the white cardstock in the frame.  Technically, the white isn’t even cardstock.  It’s the back of some printed paper that I knew I was never going to use so I just cut it to fit the frame.  I have oodles of printed paper that I know I’m never going to use so at least now I know what I can do with it  :-).

Here’s the whole thing.  I’m so proud to have finished it without buying anything new!  I’m working really hard on working with what I have.  As a matter of fact, hubby just cleaned out his closet and I found some several pairs of khaki shorts and a nice tan and blue plaid shirt that I am going to turn into a baby blanket for my neice who is having a baby in a few weeks.  I hope I can take that picture in my head and turn it into what I am wanting 🙂

She’s Done

I finally finished up the lap quilt that I’ve been working on for awhile now.  Originally I picked up one charm pack of Moda Simplicity squares that were calling my name.  I had no idea what I was going to do with them but I had to have them.  I decided to just keep it simple so I went back and bought some more fabric from the same line to add to what I had.   I’m not a very experienced quilter and normally use low loft batting but for this one I used high loft and I have to say I prefer that and will probably use it from now on.  I hand quilted it and then when it came time to do the binding, I sewed it to the back of the quilt and then used a decorative stitch to sew it down to the front.  I love the way it turned out and the fact that it took much less time to do it.   I’ve decided this will be my quilt 🙂

Rain, glorious rain

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , , , , at 12:13 am by sillydreamer

I’m so happy right now because it’s raining.  Not just a little shower, this is a full on down pour and I hope it lasts for a couple of hours at least 🙂  We need it so badly right now.

Thankfully, hubby didn’t wash the cars or else I wouldn’t be relishing this quite so much lol.

Guess what I was supposed to do today?  Serve jury duty!  I called last night and was told it was cancelled so I didn’t have to do it.  it’s not that I didn’t want to, because I think it would have been interesting, but I hate to put my daycare parents in a position that they have to find someone else to take care of their children or take off from work.  Actually, the parents of one of my little guys are both attorneys so they of course understand and didn’t have a problem with it but did try and get me out of having to serve.  It didn’t work though and if the trial wasn’t cancelled I would have been pleading my case with the judge this morning to try and get excused.  Maybe some day I will have a “normal” job where all I have to do is make one call to my boss and tell them I won’t be in due to jury duty.

Not much else is happening in my world lately.  I’ve almost finished quilting my blanket and hopefully will be able to start the binding tomorrow.  I read on someone’s blog (sorry, I can’t remember who’s) recently that they sewed the binding to the back of the quilt and then used a decorative stitch to sew it down on the front so I thought I might try that and see if I like it.  It would certainly save a lot of time!  I’ll share pictures when I’m done.

Still raining 🙂

It’s true, I suck

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , at 5:29 pm by sillydreamer

I suck at blogging lately.  I just can’t seem to come up with anything to blog about so hence my absence.  The girls are busy wrapping up the end of the school year and that’s about all that’s going on here.  The weather is beautiful so I’m out with the kidlets more frequently so there’s lots of time taken up with putting on and taking off socks and shoes, etc.  Little Miss is totally potty trained now so that’s big news!  She was so easy!  Little Mister is not quite ready yet but we are working towards that slowly.

Want to hear something weird?  I have discovered that some of my pictures are missing from Windows Vista.  Poof, they are just gone.  I am the only one that messes around with the Photo Gallery so I know someone didn’t accidentally delete them.  Thank goodness I have uploaded all of them to Photobucket so I was able to go and retrieve the two folders that were missing but now I’m extra paranoid about it.  So very strange.

I finished my string quilt and now I am working on a crazy quilt to use up all these little bits of fabric I have left over.  On a whim I bought a Moda charm pack but now I’m stumped as to what to do with it.  There are 50 five inch squares and then I bought four fat quarters of coordingating fabric but need a pattern to use it on.  I hate it when I don’t have a plan!

I got the pattern for this quilt here It was very easy and fun. It took me quite awhile because I did all the quilting by hand. I liked the way it turned out but it was a slow process.

Because this one was so easy and I liked it so much, I’ve already began working on another one for Holly. I think I’ll be machine quilting this one though LOL!

Mornin’ Glories!

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , , , , at 4:10 pm by sillydreamer

Isn’t receiving an extra 60 minutes over the week-end THE BEST?

The week-end was nice.  We had football Friday night and my daughter was chosen as Charmer of the Week so that was exciting.  Also, we won and our big rival that we play this week lost to a team that we’ve already beaten so things are looking good.  Now, you know I am NOT a football person but everyone, and I mean everyone, gets into this rivalry.  They’ve beaten us for 10 years straight so we are hoping to break their streak this time.  Maybe you have to be from small time Texas to really “get” the spirit of high school football.  And again, it’s not my thing but I’m proud that my town gets behind our team and supports them so heartily.  When we play away games, we usually have more fans than the home team.  We rock I tell ya.

I finished my demin rag quilt so I now I have to take it to the laundromat and wash it.  I’m ready for all the little “stringies” to be gone.  I’ve got lint and strings everywhere!  LOL!  I’m trying to decide if I should do the writing in regular ball point pen or buy some fabric markers.  I think the white or gray would look good on the darker squares so I’m leaning more that way I think.  Because I decided not to do the embroidery on some of the squares, with the fabric markers I could do some little doodles and kind of dress it up a little.  What do you think?

The girls got their report cards and they are all doing well.  We are borderline on a couple of classes but at this, I will take borderline lol.  It’s funny how your standards slip as your kids get older, isn’t it?  LOL!  I think you become more of a realist.  Of course I would love to see straight A’s and B’s but I’m ok with a C or too.  Lord knows I struggled in Math in high school too and C’s were the norm for me too.  I’ll be honest, I’m just glad to know that they are actually DOING the work!

Enjoy the day….it’s gorgeous!!!
