Baby boy quilt done

The quilt for my neice’s baby is done, and what a coincidence, he was born last Thursday!  Technically the quilt was finished last Thursday too but I didn’t upload the pictures until just now.  Just now, as in I should be cooking dinner but instead, I was uploading pictures and writing this post.  What to do with me?

This was the result of a few pairs of my husband’s khaki shorts, a plaid shirt, a khaki shirt and a pair of my old cords.  I was pleased with how it turned out, it does look nicer in person.  I did all the quilting by hand and a few different designs in various blocks.

My favorite blocks are the cordorouys!  I love the feel of them.  Actually the whole quilt is very soft.

I was stumped on what to do for the backing and binding so here’s what I came up with.  I’m such a girl that it’s really hard for me to get excited about anything other than cute, flowery, pink, girly things but that doesn’t make the whole world go ’round, does it?  For the binding, I did sew it to the back and used a basic zig zag stitch to finish it off.  The picture I took of that didn’t come out so well so I didn’t bother posting it.

A work in progress

I finished the quilt top for my neice’s baby.  Hubby cleaned out his closet and I used three pairs of khaki shorts, a plaid shirt and a pair of cords that I haven’t worn in a couple of years.  All to a good cause 🙂  I’ll go tomorrow and find the backing and binding to finish it up.  In case you are interested I cut strips 2 1/2 inches wide, 4 1/2 inches wide and 8 1/2 inches square.  I used one 4 1/2 strip, and two 2 1/2 inch strips to make a square.  I laid them out in a checkerboard design, alternating the three strip squares with a solid 8 1/2 inch square.  I cut a three inch wide strip from each of the three strip squares and joined those together to make a row on the top and a row on the bottom of the quilt.  The picture was taken with my Blackberry so the quality isn’t as good as if I had used my regular camera.  I have to say that I love using the Blackberry because I don’t have to resize, just copy and paste though 🙂

Today Hubby offered to stop into a quilt store that I haven’t visited yet so of course I took him up on it.  Why wouldn’t I?  It was really nice and carried more of the style fabric I like…..bright colors and cute prints as opposed to the “traditional” quilting fabrics.  Even though I am currently working on a quilt and have another that I am also working on, I couldn’t resist picking up a couple of these charm packs.  I can’t wait to do something with them!  It is Flirtations by Moda and so stinking cute!  Hubby scored major points for taking me there AND also going into another quilt store that I hadn’t been into yet.  All this from a man who would probably prefer having his fingernails ripped out than having to go into Joann’s to look for fabric!  Very impressive 🙂

A Crafttastic Day

Hubby got me this beautiful frame awhile back to go in my bathroom but I had no idea what I was going to put in it.  Well actually, in my head I had an idea but searched high and low for some stickers or stamps of what I wanted with no luck.  I had actually forgotten about it until a couple of days ago and pulled it out.   I pulled out some rubber stamps that I had and stamped the images on either end.  Then I found a chipboard bird that I just traced onto black cardstock, cut out and mounted onto the white cardstock in the frame.  Technically, the white isn’t even cardstock.  It’s the back of some printed paper that I knew I was never going to use so I just cut it to fit the frame.  I have oodles of printed paper that I know I’m never going to use so at least now I know what I can do with it  :-).

Here’s the whole thing.  I’m so proud to have finished it without buying anything new!  I’m working really hard on working with what I have.  As a matter of fact, hubby just cleaned out his closet and I found some several pairs of khaki shorts and a nice tan and blue plaid shirt that I am going to turn into a baby blanket for my neice who is having a baby in a few weeks.  I hope I can take that picture in my head and turn it into what I am wanting 🙂
