On Saturday, hubby and I were working very hard adding blowing extra insulation into our attic.  We didn’t plan on this happening.ceiling  Hubby’s foot slipped and went right through the ceiling!!!  Thankfully  he didn’t get hurt, just some scrapes and bruises but oh what a mess!  ceiling2We just had to laugh it off and keep going though.  We’ve gotten all the mess cleaned up and the hole is patched and ready to texture so it turned out alright.  I’m glad he’s handy and could do all that without us having to hire someone 🙂

My New Toy

Apologies first for not blogging in so long.   Let’s just blame that on Facebook, ok.

Now on to the fun stuff!!!

I have been looking around for a new sewing machine for awhile now.  I love my little Singer Simple but let’s be honest, there’s not much to it.  I knew that when I bought it but I didn’t really know how much sewing and quilting I would do so I didn’t want to invest too much.  I had been pricing them in the stores but in the spirit of not wanting to shell out too much money, I turned to my good old faithful Craigslist.   I would check several times a day and finally Saturday night one popped up that caught my eye.  I mulled it over until about noon on Sunday and I called the owner and made plans to go get it.  Isn’t she a beaut??  It’s a Brother NV-600.

brotherThe lady had taken impeccable care of it and decided it was time for an upgrade for her since she was getting more into machine embroidery.  She bought it 4 years ago and paid over $900.  She sold it to me for $350 :-)))))  I did some research online and found that I could still buy this machine brand new anywhere from $500 to $800 so you know this makes me love the machine even more.  It has features that I know I’ll never figure out but I will have fun trying.  Here’s the best part……sewingaccess

A tray full of feet!!!!!  How exciting is that??  Do you have any idea how easily you can sew a denim rag quilt with a walking foot?  I do now!!!  And this…..quiltingfoot

a foot for free motion quilting!!!  I am over the moon about it all.

I really hesitated about spending the money for this but it was such a good deal, I couldn’t resist.  Even my husband, who is way more frugal than I am, told me I should get it and I’m so glad I did.  I am going to finish hand quilting the Love quilt and then my next quilt will be done on the machine so I can’t wait to get started.  I have already started practicing with small scraps of material and batting because it’s going to take quite a bit of practice to get it down but I’m up for the challenge.

Making Do

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , , at 11:37 pm by sillydreamer

The stars did not align but the kids left early so I wanted to post at least one of the recipes that I talked about.

Pumpkin Bread

1 cup vegetable oil
3 cups sugar
1 large can pumpkin
4 eggs, beaten
3 cups flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 1/4 tsp. cinammon
1 tsp cloves
1 cup walnuts chopped

Mix all ingredients in order. Grease and flour loaf pan and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Yields 3 loaves.
Now to explain my title, making do. I am really in the mindset these days to just make do with what I have. I don’t think I’ve been a particularly wasteful person but when you stop and think of all the little trips you made to the store to get that one little thing, it really adds up. Now that I’m focusing on that, I am trying to do better. My neighbor made this bread for us when we moved into our old house 9 years ago so I got this recipe from her. I can’t tell you how good this bread is! When I got ready to finally make this the other day I discovered I didn’t have cloves or walnuts. I was actually at the store and was going to get them but once I saw the price of cloves, something I doubt I’m ever going to use again, I decided to go another route. I left that out and added in some nutmeg. I have an almost full box of raisins so instead of walnuts, I put those in. It was still as delicious as I remember it and felt proud of the fact that I just used what I had on hand 🙂 I am now calling it the “Make Do Pumpkin Bread”. My family loved it and as a matter of fact, it’s all gone and I just baked this on Sunday night.

Not much to say

Sorry I haven’t blogged much lately but I feel like I don’t have much to say these days. I’ve been busy with my Love quilt and that’s about it. Also having two babies now instead of just the one has really occupied my day and then there is so much to tend to in the evenings that the day just slips by before I know it.

I did make two recipes that turned out great so if the stars line up just right and two little babies nap at the same time, I will post those later 🙂

It takes all kinds

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , , at 2:33 pm by sillydreamer

Last night was our annual home owner’s association meeting where we are given an accounting of where our money is going.   We are very new to this game so our plan is to just sit back, listen and watch.   There were 5 couples, including us and 3 individuals that attended.  Quite a bit of griping about this and that but whatever.  It is our money and we are entitled to that.

At the end of the meeting it was kind of an open floor type thing where the personal issues are addressed……basketball goals being left on the sidewalk, people parking and blocking a portion of the sidewalk, trash being left in the park, and people building sheds and other structures before getting permission.  Blah, blah.  Again, we do have the right to say something if it violates our by laws.  The thing that really got me was a lady raised her hand and said that her neighbor has a wooden swingset/fort in her backyard that is supposed to have a canopy on it and there wasn’t one there and she wanted to know what could be done about that.

Really??  Of all the woes in the world, this canopy-less wooden fort is causing you grief?  What I wouldn’t give to live your uncomplicated life and that be my only worry!  LOL!  I just looked and my husband and shook my head and told him this was probably my last HOA meeting and I could see why the turn out was so low to begin with.   I guess it takes all kinds to make this world go ’round but my goodness……get a grip!

Ding dong, knock, knock, knock

Posted in Uncategorized at 4:27 pm by sillydreamer

This is not the sound you want to be awakened to at 3:00 in the morning but that’s exactly what I was hearing very early on Saturday. Life with teens is never dull and that was the case when they decided to leave the house they were spending the night at and go for a little ride. Thankfully the Mom woke up not too long after they left and called her daughter’s cell phone and was able to get them back home pretty quickly. Little toots! Needless to say, their world just got a little smaller for awhile.

Other than that, not much going on. Hubby started his new job today so it’s lonely here without him. I hope his day is going ok and this turns out to be a good match for him. We’re not kidding ourselves though, in these times a job is a job and they are very hard to come by so I’m sure he will make it work no matter what. We are still being given a return date on his job that he was laid off from but who really knows if or when that will happen.

Saturday afternoon Haley had a Charmer performance and that went well. I can’t believe her senior year is winding down so quickly. She is really going to miss this part of high school.

Busy body

My new baby (8 weeks) started today and she’s so stinking cute!  She is presently napping, as is the 6 month old, so I just have about a second of free time 🙂  We are all getting to know each other and A, the 6 month old, just keeps looking and looking at her as if to say, “um, who are you and why are you here?  I am the baby. ”  So very cute.  I’m a little rusty on two little ones and a 3 year old I guess because I am feeling very busy this morning lol.

A good friend of mine called me last night and was filling me in on her 17 year old daughter leaving home.  Aigh!  My twins and her daughter have been good friends since 6th grade so we are all close and I feel badly for what they are going through.  I’m sure the daughter will be home today but still….just the conflict.  She kept asking me what I would do in that situation and all I could honestly say was I don’t know.  She said she wanted to go get her and bring her home but also wanted to stick it out and see what her daughter was going to do.  It’s very easy to say what you would do or how you would handle something but unless you are in those shoes how do you know?   I just told her I was here to talk if she needed me.  Thankfully we haven’t had to deal with that particular problem yet.

I hear A calling me so I’m outta here.  Have a wonderful day 🙂

“Brrr”, said the naughty dog

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , at 4:44 pm by sillydreamer

See the black and brown dog on top of the yellow dog? That’s Lucy. The yellow dog she is laying on, because it’s too cold to lay on the ground, is Nina. See all the white fluff scattered around their kennel? That’s the blanket that was put inside their dog house to help keep them warm. Want to know why it’s shredded in a million pieces? That’s because of Lucy. Want to know why this picture is so crappy? That’s because my rechargeable batteries for my camera no longer hold a charge and I had to use my Blackberry to take this.

Let me tell you about these dogs. Nina, a lab and chow mix, was rescued from our local pound. She was already about 6 months and very, very close to being put down because she had been there so long. Danny took the girls down to pick out a dog and when they let her out to be seen, Danny said she ran and ran around in circles, so happy to be out of that cage. She is the BEST dog in the world. She’s sweet and loving, never chews up anything and never barks. She can bark but she chooses not to I guess. We’ve had her about 9 years and I could probably count on one hand the number of times I’ve heard her bark.

Then there’s Lucy.

Lucy is a beagle, cocker spaniel mix that I bought from a pet store. I love her and I can honestly say I am probably the only person in this whole world that does. She is so cute and loves me too. If my husband had his way about it, that dog would be so gone though! She’s a chewer. She’s chewed up every toy or shoe that’s ever been left out. She’s also a digger and that’s what really ticks Danny off. This dog digs like crazy. I really thought she would outgrow it but she’s almost 4 now so I don’t think that’s an option.

I sometimes wonder what Nina thinks about Lucy lol.  I know they love each other but I wonder if Nina gets as frustrated with that naughty dog as we do sometimes.  Like now for instance, instead of having a warm blanket to lay on in the doghouse, it’s in a million pieces on the ground.  That’s the wonderful thing about Nina, she just goes with the flow 🙂  There’s wonderful things about the naughty dog too but it’s hard to think of them sometimes.  Oh well, she’s mine and I’ll just keep on loving her naughty little butt.

It’s Monday!

Posted in Uncategorized at 3:23 pm by sillydreamer

The past week-end was great.  Hubs and I attended our first home owners association meeting on Saturday morning and it went ok.  Out of 130 homes in our subdivision I think there were 14 people there, including us lol.

On Sunday hubs and I took the dogs for a nice long walk, which they loved.  They were so tired when they got back home, I don’t think I saw them move again for the rest of the day.  Now that I write this down, it looks like my week-end was pretty darn boring but it was very relaxing so that’s what I like.  Saturday night we built a fire, watched TV and I drank pomegranate martinis so does that make it sound any more exciting?  I didn’t think so.

The new baby starts next Monday so I will spend a little time moving some things around in the playroom.  I picked up a new playpen last night since my other one bit the dust after many years of babies in it.  And does it ever fail?  I had that opening since August and now that it’s filled, I got a call from a mother of my daughter’s friends.  LOL.  When I’m full, I get calls all the time I swear.

I’ve got a million things to do so I had better get to doing them.  Have a wonderful Monday 🙂
