I’m Not Willy Nilly

bitsquiltfrnt I originally saw this idea for a quilt at someone’s blog, either here or here, I can’t remember which and thought I have to do this.  This is so easy and carefree and so stinking cute.  Two out of three aren’t bad I guess.  Actually it is very simple……randomly cut small squares of colored fabric and then box them in on three sides with white.  The problem I have is I don’t work well on the fly apparently.  I do better with specific sizes and precise instructions on how to put it all together.  Too bad for me because I do really love the random look of it.  Originally this was going to be lap size but decided to cut what I had put together in half and make two very generous doll quilts or two skimpy crib size quilts 🙂

bitsquiltcloseAnother reason for choosing to make two smaller sizes is because this was my first attempt at machine quilting.  I think it went ok for a first try.  It’s definately something you have to practice, practice, practice to get it just right.  To be honest, I really like the look of  my hand stitched quilts better and I enjoy hand quilting but I will try my hand at machine quilting again and get better at it.

bitsquiltbackAnother pieced back.  I am slowly but surely working my way through my small stash of fabric so i will feel justified in buying more lol.

Oh and one more thing I learned.  I wish I could remember where I got this tip from because it’s so smart and helpful.  When putting the quilt “sandwich” together I would always lay the back down first, then the batting and finally the top.  Thanks to some smart soul in cyberland I now know it’s much easier to lay your batting down then center up the top on that.  Trim it to the correct size, then roll it up and put it aside.  Lay your back down and unroll your top/batting combo onto that.   It makes the process so much easier and faster!  Now why didn’t I think of that??   I hope that tip helps someone as much as it helped me.

I don’t have any pictures to share yet but I am finally doing some machine quilting!  I’m so excited to finally get around to trying my hand at this.  I definitely need practice but I’m already seeing an improvement from when I first started the quilt.  As a matter of fact, I am even going back and taking some of the original stitching out and doing it over.  Next on my list to try is applique.  I’ve seen some of the cutest quilts that have been appliqued so I want to try my hand at that also.  Thank you to all the bloggers out there that have shared their tips on both of  these topics because they have been very helpful to me.

An Expensive Lesson

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , at 12:47 pm by sillydreamer

I am 40 years old so you would think I know not to assume things, right?  Wrong!  The only defense I have is that thankfully we have been very blessed to be healthy and therefore I am not insurance savvy.

One of my daughter’s has been having some tummy issues for awhile so we took her in to see our family physician.  He in turn refers her to another Dr. who orders a colonoscopy.  The first thing they always do is check your insurance.  Yes, we take it and this is what your copay is.  We schedule the procedure and again we are told it’s accepted and here is what your copay is.

I need to stop and commend my daughter on what a little trooper she was for the whole thing.  The procedure itself wasn’t bad at all, it’s the prep for it.  First of all she could only have liquids the day before.  That was terrible but she never once complained she was hungry.  I would have complained so much I probably would have been sick of the sound of my own voice but she was awesome.  Then she had to down all that nasty medicine.  Again, not a word of complaint.

So the insurance bills have been trickeling  in with no problems until yesterday.  There was a pending status on a pretty steep one so hubby got on the phone to ask some questions.   Turns out that yes, the Dr accepted our insurance but he wasn’t an in network provider, nor was the facility that the procedure was perfored in.  We blindly assumed that he was because our Dr had referred us to him.  Of course  in hindsight it makes perfect sense to question that but at the time we never gave it a thought.  The difference for us could mean a few thousand dollars instead of less than $200 as we were led to believe.  Pretty expensive lesson, huh.

My daughter is doing better.  The Dr believes she has irritable bowel syndrome with constipation so he put her on a medicine that seems to be helping so this is a good thing.  You can’t put a price on your health, period.  It doesn’t matter what it costs us, we will pay it and be thankful that is all that is wrong with her but it would have been nice to do this over and ask a simple question first and not just assume that a copay is all that is owed.  I hope my mistake saves someone some pennies 🙂

It Feels Like Home

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , at 12:44 pm by sillydreamer

We’ve now been in the new house 6 months and it feels like we are all settled in.  Sometimes it feels like we’ve been here forever, which is a good thing.  However, there are a few things about the old house that I miss very much.  One of them, probably the main one, is that every spring and summer for the last few years, I would have doves come and build their nests underneath our patio awning.  I know I probably drove my family crazy climbing up on the kitchen sink and snapping pictures every day of the mama and her family.  dovefamily That mama (or I guess it could have been the daddy) would sit up there for weeks without leaving.  Once the little babies had hatched, I knew I had about 3 weeks and they would fly away.  One time I actually got to watch the babies fly away from the nest!  This should tell you just how much time I spent watching to be able to catch that moment!   doves

Because this is a newer subdivision we don’t have big trees and we don’t have a covered patio either so I have no birds to watch.  Poor me!  However this past week-end Danny noticed that there were birds flying in and out of one of our bushes so he went over to see what all the fuss was about.  nest 001

Isn’t that cool?  I am so thrilled to know that there is a new birdie family staying at my house, even if I can’t watch them!

It’s Been Awhile

twinsI can’t believe I haven’t posted since the end of April!   How can that be?  Life has just been rolling on by.  Oldest daughter has graduated high school.  She is enrolled in a local college here in town and has already started taking one class online.   We are thrilled that she has  a plan and is pursuing it!  grad

We are also very thrilled that Heather and Holly passed their last year of TAKS in school so NO MORE TAKS for us.  If you aren’t from Texas you won’t understand the stress relief this is.  You can be a straigh A student, not pass the TAKS test and not be able to graduate from high school so this is great news for us.  Heather didn’t pass the math part last year so we were a little worried.  Not only did she pass the math this year, she was commended lol.  Yay!!!

Hubby has started a new job that will be better fit for him and closer to the amount of money he was making before so this is a good thing for all of us.  The only drawback is that it’s over an hour away, which I know for most people that’s nothing but it will be an adjustment for him because he’s always worked within 15 minutes of his job.  We are just very thankful that he was hired with this company, no matter where it is!

dannyandgirlsBy the way, Heather is in the red shirt and Holly in the black and white.

My daycare is doing well.  I have the same two little boys but my little baby girl is spending the summer with her Mom, who is a school nurse, but she will be back in the fall.  I know this because she is paying to hold her spot so that is a blessing for me.  I am watching another 3 year old boy a couple of days a week which is also a blessing because it gives my current 3 year old a playmate.

On a sad note I found out last week that my younger brother passed away from melanoma.  I really don’t have any other details than that because we weren’t close and hadn’t spoken to each other in more than 15 years.  No hard feelings or anything, we just didn’t have a typical brother/sister relationship.   We hadn’t lived in the same house since I was about 9 and once I was 16 he moved away and we had next to no contact with each other through the years.  However I was sad to hear of his passing, especially given the fact he was only 36 years old.

So that’s my life as of late.  I’ve got a few quilting projects I am working on but nothing really to share yet.  I’m hoping to find some time to get something, anything finished lol!
