It’s Official

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:01 pm by sillydreamer

After being laid off for the last 4 months, hubby finally got the official word that his company is shutting down.  He has already been working at another job for several weeks now but it’s still a bit of a let down.   I can’t say that we were all that surprised by the news but of course disappointed because we had hoped that they would eventually start production again.  Oh well, what can you do?  At least by telling the employees they can now get their severance packages so that is a good thing.  Hubby had only been there 8 years but the majority of the employees have been there 20 to 30 years so they will get a very nice package plus there were several out there that are ready to retire anyway so this is good news for them.  They get their severance package and their pension.   I’m glad this is good for some people 🙂

Uugh, I’ve had a nasty cold the last few days.  As a matter of fact, I took yesterday off and I haven’t done that since

Unfortunately Marla

Posted in Uncategorized at 2:49 pm by sillydreamer

I found this over at Kate’s blog and thought I would give it a try too.

Your simply Google the words “unfortunately” and your name and take the first sentence of the search results.

1.  Unfortunately, Marla needs training not to jump on people.

2.  Unfortunately, Marla’s kitty buddy Skeddie, passed away this week.

3.  Unfortunately, Marla’s did not survive in Alhambra. It closed early in 2007.

4.  Unfortunately for Marla, she may have gotten a little too much inspiration from Nicky’s dossier.

5.  Unfortunately, Marla was killed in an accident about seven years ago.

6.  Unfortunately, Marla’s life was tragically cut short when she died in a suicide bomb attack in April 2005 at the age of 28.

7.  Unfortunately, Marla was voted off the very next week.

8.  Unfortunately, Marla was plain in appearance and socially timid.

9.  Unfortunately, Marla fell down an elevator shaft in the Seegram Building in October 1997 and was killed.

10.  Unfortunately Marla was admited to hospital yesterday which has put a dampner on the end of sojourn events.

Kate listed 20 statements and I was going to, thinking this would be funny but UNFORTUNATELY, “Marla”  seems to attract an awful lot of bad luck so we’ll just leave it at 10 and apparently be thankful that I’m still alive!

Treading lightly

I don’t mean to wish time away but I will say that I am looking forward to not having to deal with school issues.  Thankfully we have had very, very little things come up over the girls’ school career but when they do, I don’t like having to deal with it.

Heather has been taking a ceramics class this year.  She liked it a lot at first but after a few weeks she was not that into it.  She did tell me the teacher was very cool and she liked him.  That basically translated into he didn’t really care what the kids did as long as they didn’t bother him.  How do I know this is true?  Heather stopped attending his class, opting to go hang out in her twin sister’s class instead on those days, and not once was she counted absent.  She even told me that she wasn’t going and that he never checked roll anyway.   I told her she had better be careful and whatever counsequences she received if she got caught was on her.  She’s 17, what can I say?  Of course I told her she needs to do the right thing and go but she’s going to do what she wants and be honest, if you could skip a class and still make a 100 in there, wouldn’t you?  I am serious about the 100 grade.  She’s made it every single grade period and also on a final exam that she wasn’t even there to take!

Like I said, Heather liked the teacher and thought he was cool.  She said all he did was sit in his office and talked to other students that would come hang out in there with him and listen to Bob Marley.  She also told me that he asked her if the ceramic turtle she made was high because he had red eyes.  Go figure!  LOL!  I  think that’s an innappropriate thing to say to a student but that’s his business.  It didn’t offend me but it does make me think he’s not very smart but whatever.

Several weeks ago I got a call from the teacher of the class that Heather has been hanging out in instead of her own.   She wanted me to k now that Heather is always in there and was I aware of that.  I told her yes, that I did know and I would tell her to start going to her own class and for her to call me if she showed back up in there.  She asked me where she was supposed to be and I told her.  She found it very interesting that not once was she ever counted absent for not being in there.  I told her it was interesting that she was making a 100 for her grade.  Apparently the teacher went and told on the other teacher because now Heather is failing.  She’s actually attending the class and failing!

Of course I want to tell this teacher that I know all about him not checking roll and passing her anyway but I don’t want to make too many waves since she has to be in there for the rest of the year.  He and I have exchanged a few emails about her grade and what she needs to do so I think for now that’s about all I can do.  There’s so much more that I want to do but for now I think treading lightly and dropping subtle hints to him that I know what the real deal is will be enough to at least let her pass the class.  Only one year after this of having to worry about teachers anyway 🙂

On Saturday, hubby and I were working very hard adding blowing extra insulation into our attic.  We didn’t plan on this happening.ceiling  Hubby’s foot slipped and went right through the ceiling!!!  Thankfully  he didn’t get hurt, just some scrapes and bruises but oh what a mess!  ceiling2We just had to laugh it off and keep going though.  We’ve gotten all the mess cleaned up and the hole is patched and ready to texture so it turned out alright.  I’m glad he’s handy and could do all that without us having to hire someone 🙂

My New Toy

Apologies first for not blogging in so long.   Let’s just blame that on Facebook, ok.

Now on to the fun stuff!!!

I have been looking around for a new sewing machine for awhile now.  I love my little Singer Simple but let’s be honest, there’s not much to it.  I knew that when I bought it but I didn’t really know how much sewing and quilting I would do so I didn’t want to invest too much.  I had been pricing them in the stores but in the spirit of not wanting to shell out too much money, I turned to my good old faithful Craigslist.   I would check several times a day and finally Saturday night one popped up that caught my eye.  I mulled it over until about noon on Sunday and I called the owner and made plans to go get it.  Isn’t she a beaut??  It’s a Brother NV-600.

brotherThe lady had taken impeccable care of it and decided it was time for an upgrade for her since she was getting more into machine embroidery.  She bought it 4 years ago and paid over $900.  She sold it to me for $350 :-)))))  I did some research online and found that I could still buy this machine brand new anywhere from $500 to $800 so you know this makes me love the machine even more.  It has features that I know I’ll never figure out but I will have fun trying.  Here’s the best part……sewingaccess

A tray full of feet!!!!!  How exciting is that??  Do you have any idea how easily you can sew a denim rag quilt with a walking foot?  I do now!!!  And this…..quiltingfoot

a foot for free motion quilting!!!  I am over the moon about it all.

I really hesitated about spending the money for this but it was such a good deal, I couldn’t resist.  Even my husband, who is way more frugal than I am, told me I should get it and I’m so glad I did.  I am going to finish hand quilting the Love quilt and then my next quilt will be done on the machine so I can’t wait to get started.  I have already started practicing with small scraps of material and batting because it’s going to take quite a bit of practice to get it down but I’m up for the challenge.
