Love is patient, love is kind

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , at 6:19 pm by sillydreamer

I don’t claim to be a perfect parent by any means.  I know we all have those less than stellar parenting moments that you hope no one witnesses but I want to share with you the most pitiful experience I witnessed on Friday night.

At the football game Friday night, a family/group of people sat down a few rows ahead of us.  There was a Dad, Mom, two female friends and two small little boys, 4ish and 6ish.  In case you didn’t already know, football games are boring to kids (and some adults, ahem).  They don’t get what’s going on and it’s two and half hours of trying to entertain yourself.  These parents/adults wanted their kids to sit still and look straight ahead.  Yeah, right.  They never talked to these boys except to make mean faces and repeatedly say, “no, stop, don’t, or I’m about to get you” and usually a smack on the leg went along with that.  They didn’t try to engage these kids, entertain them, play with them, nothing.  The younger boy had a small stuffed animal that he was playing with and was tossing it down a couple of rows, walking down to get it, then tossing it back up to the original spot.  He wasn’t bother anyone, wasn’t getting in anyone’s way or anything.  Mean face Daddy takes notice, got up, snatched the toy up, never saying a word to the boy but making a very stern face at him and then keeps the stuffed animal.  You should have seen the little boy’s face fall.  It was so sad.

The whole scenario just made me sad for those boys.  I’m not kidding when I say that those adults never once spoke to those kids except to get on to them.  They certainly never smiled at them or were kind to them in anyway.  They gave no indication in the two and half hours that I was behind them that those kids were anything to them but an annoyance.   As I said before, I know we all have moments that we hope no one witnesses but my goodness, I would hate for someone to watch me for two and half hours and wonder why I even had kids!  There was a small group of pre teen boys sitting behind this man and apparently they were being too loud and he makes a big show of turning all the way around and giving them a very menacing look.  At this point I really just wanted to push him all the way down to the bottom of the bleachers!  I know, not very neighborly of me, is it?  The sad thing is, in a few years (if not already) those boys will feel the same way about their Dad that I did.  What else is he teaching them?  It breaks my heart to think about it.

Baby boy quilt done

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , at 11:48 pm by sillydreamer

The quilt for my neice’s baby is done, and what a coincidence, he was born last Thursday!  Technically the quilt was finished last Thursday too but I didn’t upload the pictures until just now.  Just now, as in I should be cooking dinner but instead, I was uploading pictures and writing this post.  What to do with me?

This was the result of a few pairs of my husband’s khaki shorts, a plaid shirt, a khaki shirt and a pair of my old cords.  I was pleased with how it turned out, it does look nicer in person.  I did all the quilting by hand and a few different designs in various blocks.

My favorite blocks are the cordorouys!  I love the feel of them.  Actually the whole quilt is very soft.

I was stumped on what to do for the backing and binding so here’s what I came up with.  I’m such a girl that it’s really hard for me to get excited about anything other than cute, flowery, pink, girly things but that doesn’t make the whole world go ’round, does it?  For the binding, I did sew it to the back and used a basic zig zag stitch to finish it off.  The picture I took of that didn’t come out so well so I didn’t bother posting it.

Fly away little birdies

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , at 2:20 pm by sillydreamer

I miss these little guys!  Way back in the spring, we had a mama dove build a nest up on the header beam of our patio and it’s been used  three different times to raise little birdy families.  I’ve been such an absolute nut about it…..these are just two of the countless photos I’ve taken of them.  The mama (or I guess it could be the daddy) sits in the nest for about three weeks solid.  I don’t really know how long it takes for the eggs to hatch but I know it’s almost a month before we get to see the babies.  Once we see them though, it’s about a week or so and then they are gone.  Aren’t they cute?  I would climb up on the counter and snap pictures through my kitchen window so I wouldn’t disturb them.  The family before this one I actually got to see the babies after they left the nest.  I wish I had gotten to see them actually fly away for the first time but I didn’t.  When I did see them, they were hanging around on the swingset.  I was amazed at how big they were!  I was determined to see these little guys make their first flight but that didn’t happen either.  I had been out running errands and when I got home and checked on them, the nest was empty.  I was so disappointed!!

About a week before these little guys flew away, I noticed this ritual they did with their Mom every day.  All three of them would put their beaks together and sway in a circle.  It was the oddest thing I’ve ever seen!  They did this several times a day.  And yes, I spent lots and lots of time just watching these guys which I know makes me sound pathetic but I couldn’t help myself.  My family was beginning to get a little worried I think.  I wonder if all mama birds do this with their babies or if it was just this one and if it has any meaning?

I miss this little birdy family.  I looked forward to getting up and seeing them every morning.  I’ve had several doves sit up in that nest in the last few weeks but so far none of them have stayed.  I was hoping to get one more little family up there before fall but I don’t think that’s going to happen.  Maybe next spring 🙂

Off they go

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , , , , at 8:20 pm by sillydreamer

Monday was the girls’ first day back to school.  Haley is a senior and Heather and Holly are juniors.  Unbelievable!  I have taken a picture of them on their first day of school since kindergarten and they never seem to get any happier about that fact!  Oh well, I’m the Mom and we will do as I say when it comes to taking pictures.  Besides, this is Haley’s last year and Heather and Holly only have one more time to endure this tradition.

What makes this year very different for me is the fact that Haley is driving them all to school in her car.  I  have driven them practically every single day of their school career and now I’m not.  One part of me is happy about not having to deal with the morning rush but the other part of me is very sad that they are doing this on their own….without me.   I actually teared up a little as they pulled away from the curb.

A work in progress

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , at 4:17 am by sillydreamer

I finished the quilt top for my neice’s baby.  Hubby cleaned out his closet and I used three pairs of khaki shorts, a plaid shirt and a pair of cords that I haven’t worn in a couple of years.  All to a good cause 🙂  I’ll go tomorrow and find the backing and binding to finish it up.  In case you are interested I cut strips 2 1/2 inches wide, 4 1/2 inches wide and 8 1/2 inches square.  I used one 4 1/2 strip, and two 2 1/2 inch strips to make a square.  I laid them out in a checkerboard design, alternating the three strip squares with a solid 8 1/2 inch square.  I cut a three inch wide strip from each of the three strip squares and joined those together to make a row on the top and a row on the bottom of the quilt.  The picture was taken with my Blackberry so the quality isn’t as good as if I had used my regular camera.  I have to say that I love using the Blackberry because I don’t have to resize, just copy and paste though 🙂

Today Hubby offered to stop into a quilt store that I haven’t visited yet so of course I took him up on it.  Why wouldn’t I?  It was really nice and carried more of the style fabric I like…..bright colors and cute prints as opposed to the “traditional” quilting fabrics.  Even though I am currently working on a quilt and have another that I am also working on, I couldn’t resist picking up a couple of these charm packs.  I can’t wait to do something with them!  It is Flirtations by Moda and so stinking cute!  Hubby scored major points for taking me there AND also going into another quilt store that I hadn’t been into yet.  All this from a man who would probably prefer having his fingernails ripped out than having to go into Joann’s to look for fabric!  Very impressive 🙂

A Crafttastic Day

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , , , , , at 4:27 pm by sillydreamer

Hubby got me this beautiful frame awhile back to go in my bathroom but I had no idea what I was going to put in it.  Well actually, in my head I had an idea but searched high and low for some stickers or stamps of what I wanted with no luck.  I had actually forgotten about it until a couple of days ago and pulled it out.   I pulled out some rubber stamps that I had and stamped the images on either end.  Then I found a chipboard bird that I just traced onto black cardstock, cut out and mounted onto the white cardstock in the frame.  Technically, the white isn’t even cardstock.  It’s the back of some printed paper that I knew I was never going to use so I just cut it to fit the frame.  I have oodles of printed paper that I know I’m never going to use so at least now I know what I can do with it  :-).

Here’s the whole thing.  I’m so proud to have finished it without buying anything new!  I’m working really hard on working with what I have.  As a matter of fact, hubby just cleaned out his closet and I found some several pairs of khaki shorts and a nice tan and blue plaid shirt that I am going to turn into a baby blanket for my neice who is having a baby in a few weeks.  I hope I can take that picture in my head and turn it into what I am wanting 🙂

10 Things I know about Clevergrl

Posted in Uncategorized at 2:03 pm by sillydreamer

She has no idea I am doing this and hope she doesn’t mind.  Clevergrl is a bloggy buddy who is always helpful when I have technical woes when it comes to posting so here’s a little tribute to her.

1.  Clevergrl’s blog can be found here.
2.  She always answers my computer questions, like how to make this list single spaced, if I wanted it to be.  I actually did start single spacing it, but it looked too jumbled.
3.  She has a step daughter named Sunshine.  I don’t know if that’s a real or made up name because I’ve never asked.
4.  She teaches in a high school.

5.  She likes to run.  The only running done in my house is running the vaccuum cleaner or dishwasher so I admire her for that.  Good for you, Clevergrl!

6.  I have no idea what her real name is, only Clevergrl.  Works for me 🙂

7.  She just moved and apparently loves the moving experience about as much as I do, as in not at all.

8.  She doesn’t like Windows Vista.

9.  She blogs almost every day.

10.  She lives in Phoenix and actually likes the hot weather.

This was fun and harder than I thought it would be.  I had to go back to her blog and check a couple of things before I wrote them so I hope I got them right.  Sometimes I get my bloggy buddies confused with one another.  I also do this with my kids so please don’t be offended 🙂

Betty Crocker, I’m not

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , at 6:32 pm by sillydreamer

I will be the first to admit that I am not all that great when it comes to cooking.  I like to do it and more times than not, things come out as planned but there’s always that chance that things are going to flop big time.  I’ve been wanting some good old fashioned, homemade sugar cookies so I went to www.allrecipes.com (aka the best recipe website around) and found this recipe.  I just made these cookies this morning and they were wonderful, and apparently pretty foolproof, so I wanted to share it with you.

*******************************************************************************************************************

Sugar Cookies

2 3/4 cups all purpose flour                                   1 1/2 cups white sugar

1 tsp. baking soda                                                   1 egg

1/2 tsp baking powder                                             1 tsp. vanilla extract

1 cup butter, softened

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.  In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder.  Set aside.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth.  Beat in egg and vanilla.   Gradually blend in the dry ingredients.  Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls, and place onto ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden.  Let stand on cookie sheet two minutes before removing to cool on wire racks.

******************************************************************************************************************

I made about a third of the cookies plain, just as the recipe stated.  To change things up, I took a small bowl with cinammon and sugar mixed together and I rolled the balls of dough in that and then baked.  I also had a small bowl of sprinkles that I rolled some of the balls in before baking and they all turned out great.  I really liked the cinammon ones but my kids were loving the ones with sprinkles.  Those looked the prettiest too 🙂  I can’t wait for my other daycare kidlets to come back from vacation because I’m going to get them to help me bake some more.  As I said, this was a very easy recipe so that makes it tops in my book.
