“Enrique’s Journey”

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , at 8:51 pm by sillydreamer

I finished this book over the week-end.  Wow…..this book is a must read.   I have to confess that even after reading it, I don’t know how to feel about immigration.  I totally see both sides of the issue.  Ok, let me correct that.  I know how “I” feel about it but I don’t know how to put it in words.  It doesn’t bother me that so many are here.  I’m sorry that they have to go to the lengths that they do to get here and I wish things were easier for them and that it was “ok” for them to be here.  They come here and they work and work harder, longer and for less money than most citizens here.  If I lived in the conditions they lived in, I would want to come here too.  But I also see the flip side of the illegals being here too.   They usually are paid under the table and don’t pay taxes and use government services but lots of Americans do that too so I guess that brings me back to square one, doesn’t it?

This week-end Danny and I went “Trader’s Village” which is a huge outdoor flea market.  The majority of the vendors and customers are mexican and I wanted to ask all of them, “how did you get here…what did you go through to come here….did you have to leave your children behind when you came”.  Yeah, that wouldn’t have been too awkward at all!

I don’t know how this issue will be solved or if it can even BE solved.  I do know that my heart just breaks knowing that thousands of people are going to lose their life, some as young as 11 years old, to come here.

What’s Your “It”

Think it

feel it

own it

deep in your heart, where only you know it.

Now, re think it

re feel it

re own it

deep in your heart where only you know it.

Whisper it

sing it

SHOUT IT

I am currently reading a book, “Enrique’s Journey”, and I have to tell you that it’s been a very long time since something touched me so much.   No matter how you feel about immigration, you should read this book for a glimpse of the best, and worst, of the human spirit.

This bugs me

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , at 6:52 pm by sillydreamer

Forgive me if I’ve blogged about this before but I want to talk about Freecycle.  I’m sure everyone knows what it is, but I’ll explain just in case there is someone that isn’t familiar with it.  Basically it’s an internet group you can join that is based within your community and surrounding areas where you can post items that you want to get rid of or items that you are looking for, everything is free, hence the name.  It’s a wonderful way to keep things out of the landfills and get items that you need/want for free.  I’ve given and received from there.

Sometimes I am taken back by some of the requests for free items…..houses, cars, etc.  but I suppose if you are in desperate need of something, asking is free.  There are lots of requests for computers or laptops and most of those people asking will explain that they are going back to school or are planning to use the item for helping a non profit organization.  If they are telling the truth that’s wonderful but you know me, I’m usually a little skeptical.

Here’s what bugs me most.  When I give an item away, I don’t care who gets it or why.  I just need the item gone.  If I wanted to profit from it myself, I would use Ebay, Craigs List or have a garage sale myself.  Bottom line is, I don’t care who gets it, why they want it or what they do with it once they get it.  I see many posts from people offering an item and then giving a big spiel about who can request this item or they have to explain why they need it.  Basically I think it’s “whoever can beg the most, gets the prize.”  I know it shouldn’t matter to me but somehow it just bugs me…..gets under my skin in a big way.

Other than that little rant, the day is great 🙂

It’s all over.   The tree and all the decorations were taken down yesterday after everyone left and everything is back to normal and that makes me feel happy.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas.  Ours was very good.  On Christmas Eve, Danny and I had a very nice lunch at Olive Garden and then came home and let the kids have their Wii.  We wanted to get it set up on a day when the stores were still open just in case we needed to buy something extra.  Turned out there was nothing to setting it up, thank goodness.  I did have a little trouble getting it to go online but I sat down this afternoon and got that figured out.   Christmas Eve evening we all went and got a cappucino and went driving looking at Christmas lights and that was nice too.  Then it was back home for them to open up one gift.

Now if you’ve been following along, you’ll remember that instead of names this year I used numbers to identify the gifts and the numbers weren’t going to be revealed until Christmas Eve when we opened one.   The girls had it figured out anyway!  They each went and picked up the gift they thought belonged to them and the most coveted gift on their list!  Little stinks!  Oh well, it was fun anyway.

Christmas morning we opened the rest of the gifts and then around noon we had a houseful of guests.  We had a great few hours eating, talking and playing the Wii.  After everyone left I got busy taking everything down and getting it packed away.  That was the most relaxing part of the last few days lol.

It was back to work today and I had lots of fun playing with my little friends and finding out about their holiday.  One of the families was telling me that they had purchased a Santa suit and set up their video camera and videoed “Santa” bringing the gifts to the house.  I think that’s a great idea!  The mom said that her parents had done that for her when she was little and how exciting it was to see him on tape.

Now that Christmas is over, we are on to birthdays now.  My three girls have birthdays the beginning of January and two of my daycare kidlets have one within the next week.  We are going to be partied out!  Also, my oldest daughter’s half brother has one this week-end so the fun just doesn’t stop.

I don’t know about you, but I could really get used to only working 3 days a week 🙂  Enjoy the rest of your week.

What does Santa do at your house

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , at 4:17 am by sillydreamer

Tina at Sky Windows wants to know what Santa does at our houses so I thought I would share.

When I was a child we always had wrapped presents under the tree from our parents and then Santa would come and leave more presents from him.  By the time I was in the 2nd grade, I took notice that not only does Santa have the same wrapping paper as my Mom, he also had the same handwriting on the same kind of gift tags.  Things that make you go hmmmmm…….

For my kids when they were of Santa age, we always wrapped the gifts that were from us and then Santa would come Christmas Eve and leave the big, or most wanted gift, unwrapped.  He also filled the stockings and had milk and cookies before leaving.   My kids were always up at the butt crack of dawn!  A few years ago, probably when they were in the 4th or 5th grade, I had to send them back to bed twice because they came to get me at 4:30, then 5:30.  I finally got them all up by 6:00 and got the show on road.   Even now as teen agers, they still get up early for Christmas morning.  Rest assured this is the only day of the year they get up willingly at that hour!

On Christmas Eve we always let the girls open one gift.  Sometimes I choose, sometimes they choose.  This year I will choose because I know what they would want to have early.  In case you are reading this and you have young children I want to prepare you for something.  When they’re young you can buy all sorts of gifts for X amount of money.  As they grow up, their gifts get much more expensive so even though you spend the same amount, the gift pile is much smaller.   It would be very easy for me to go crazy and spend way more money than I need to at Christmas but I’m proud to say that we’ve always been pretty sensible about it.   Besides, all three girls have birthdays the second week of January so it’s one big gift/money fest around here for a few weeks!  Who the hell can afford that?

Tina, this was an excellent topic and I hope that others will share their Santa traditions.  I absolutely adore the idea of getting a gift from Mrs. Claus and Rudolph and may have to use that someday.  I forgot to mention that when the kids were younger also left a carrot out for Rudolph a few years.  One year in school the kids made some kind of reindeer food with Chex cereal, pretzels sticks and glitter.  You sprinkle it out on your lawn for the reindeer.  I thought that was a cute idea too.

I got this cool new header from www.themeheaders.com.  Isn’t it cool?  I know it doesn’t match the rest of my layout but we’ll overlook that for the time being 🙂

This is the longest.week.ever.  Our schedule has been out of whack all week and now the girls are out of school so this week has just creeped by.  I’m ready for the week-end but I can’t believe that Christmas is next week!  All I need to get is a few stocking stuffers and wrap a couple of presents and I’m done.  It hasn’t really felt like Christmas to me this year.

Guess what?  Today is my 11 year anniversary!  We’ve actually lived together for 16 years but didn’t quite make that final leap for five years lol.  No plans at all but I did want to share the fact that I did snag one of the best guys out there 🙂

A Christmas “Gotcha”

This incident would be the reason why I am using numbers this year instead of names. Let me explain.

A couple of years ago, Holly wanted a new skateboard for Christmas. We bought the one she wanted, wrapped it and put it under the tree. She would come home from school every day and pick that box up and tell me that she just knew it was her skateboard. I started out joking, telling her that she couldn’t be totally sure because things were not always what they seemed. She kept on for a few weeks…..”I know exactly what’s in that box, Mom” and of course she did but I decided to play a little joke on her. I took the skateboard out and replaced it with a metal vase and attached a card that said, “Gotcha! I told you things are not always what they seem.”

Our tradition is to open one gift on Christmas Eve and of course this is the one she wanted to open because she was soooooo sure that her skateboard was in there. Check out the look on her face……she was NOT amused! LOL!

Thanks for the music, Dan

No longer MIA

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , , at 4:51 pm by sillydreamer

I can’t believe it’s been so many days since I updated my blog!  I really haven’t had much chance to catch up on the ones I read on a regular basis, but you know how it is this time of year.  Of course, by saying that, it implies that I’ve finished my shopping and my wrapping and that’s not the case at all.  I still have some things to buy and I have not even started wrapping yet.

Speaking of wrapping, let me tell you what I am going to do this year.  My kids drive me nuts picking their  presents up and guessing what each thing is.  This year I am going to assign a number to each child and their gifts will be identified with their number.  This number will not be revealed to them until Christmas morning so they can guess every present under that tree if they want, they will have no idea who it belongs to until I tell them!  Someone gave me this idea last year and I thought it was pretty smart.  I have also heard of people using one specific paper per child and then revealing what their paper is when it’s time to unwrap the gifts.  Also smart I think.

Now tell me, when I say “please pick your toys up so we can eat lunch” does that sound anything like “please dump every toy onto the floor so we can eat lunch”?  Just wondering……
